How the Standard works

The Non-UPF Verified Standard requires rigorous product evaluation across two essential and interconnected dimensions:

Together, these two dimensions ensure that Verified products are assessed not just for what they contain, but for how they were made.

The complete Standard, including definitions, processing classification annexes and the Harmonized Prohibited Ingredients List, is available for download above.

How the Standard is maintained

The Non-UPF Verified Standard is a consensus-based document developed and maintained through a multi-stakeholder process led by the Non-GMO Project, which serves as program administrator.

As an evolving document, the Standard undergoes regular revisions, updated to reflect advances in food science, changes in manufacturing practices and feedback from program participants and the broader food community.

Public comments are accepted at any time and considered during the next revision cycle.

Who shapes the Standard

The Non-UPF Verified Standard was developed with input from across the food ecosystem to create a framework that is meaningful, achievable and credible for the industry as a whole.

A diverse group of stakeholders contribute to the Standard's production and ongoing revision, including food and beverage manufacturers, ingredient suppliers and processors, retailers and distributors, scientists and nutrition researchers, health professionals and consumer advocates.

This breadth of participation ensures the Standard reflects both scientific rigor and real-world manufacturing conditions, and that no single commercial interest shapes its direction.
